LEASES VS EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS

WHAT IS A LEASE AND AN EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS?

Know Your Options

What Is a Beat Lease? A lease (also called a non-exclusive license) lets artists legally use a beat while I still own it. Think of it like renting a beat — you can record, release, and profit from your song, but I can still lease the same instrumental to other artists.

With a lease, you can:

  • Record and release your song on all major platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.)
  • Perform your song live and monetize it
  • Use the beat for mixtapes, music videos, and radio (depending on license type)

If your song blows up and you hit your stream cap — no problem. You can always upgrade your license or purchase exclusive rights later if the beat is available to purchase exclusive rights.

What Are Exclusive Rights?

When you buy exclusive rights, the beat becomes yours alone.
That means it’s instantly removed from the store and no one else can lease or buy it again.

With an exclusive license, you get:

  • Unlimited usage and full commercial control
  • The ability to monetize without limits
  • The option to register your song with distributors or labels
  • Full-quality track out files and stems for mixing and mastering
  • Lifetime usage — no expiration date

Producers still retain their publishing share and copyright (unless otherwise agreed), but you own the song and have exclusive control over it.
